Blog Intro 2015

Welcome to the world of 8th grade reading...

Reading gives you the chance to examine life’s exotic, hilarious, and outrageous experiences. So what have YOU been reading? Do you like to laugh out loud? Read with a box of tissues nearby? Escape along with your characters on a fight for survival?
Let’s use this blog to share the high points of the books we are reading throughout the year.

Here’s how to use this blog:
Check out the tabs at the top of this page and click on the topic you chose. Navigate the page and post a thoughtful comment at the bottom.

For your second “free choice” book, post your comment at the bottom of this page. If anyone knows how to create a WORDLE, keep track of the book titles and email the finished WORDLE for us to show-off in place of (or in addition to) these directions.

In 8th grade we will expect you to make regular postings that reflect your thinking in an articulate and respectful manner. You might be surprised to discover the connections you will make with classmates when you post your ideas on this blog.

Here is a link to the suggested summer reading list for 8th graders.

Also, don't forget to log your books on your Reading Log Form.  If you need a reminder on how to find the form, go to the KRMS Summer Reading page for a tutorial.

  1. I chose to read the book Paper Towns by John Green for my free choice book. The character Margo from this book surprised me. She did so by making the story have a sort of anticlimax. Margo just disappeared one day without saying why or how. All that she left behind was clues for the main character, Quentin that show where she went. The clues she left made it seem like she wanted Quentin to find her. In the end we find out that she just left those clues so that he could know that she was ok, she didn’t intend for him to come and find her. She managed to go far away from home and live out her life on her own, without even graduating high school. One of the biggest surprises to me was that she started planning all of this when she was little, in one of her notebooks. She also made it so everyone was on her side so that she could get away with almost anything. Margo was definitely an extraordinary character, who always kept me wondering. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I hope to one day read it again.

  2. The free choice book I read was The Martian by Andy Weir. The main character in my book is named Mark Watney. Mark is an engineer and part botanist on a shelter on Mars with other crew mates. During their stay on Mars a massive dust storm occurs and the crew accidentally leave Mark on mars thinking he is dead. Mark has to go through many challenges such as making food and water on the martian surface until NASA can send a probe to rescue him. This book was really fun to read because you get to see how Mark develops and cleverly solves problems. Also this book is a great book if your into science-fiction, space, or science in general.

  3. The free choice book I read was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. In this fantasy book, main character Harry Potter and his two friends Ron and Hermione go to a fictional school in England called Hogwarts. The three found out that an evil prisoner named Sirius Black was after Harry, so the whole term they were hiding from this prisoner. After Black tried to fight his way into the school, they met up in an old house. It turns out that Black wasn't an evil person. This book is really interesting to read, and at the end of each chapter there is a different kind of suspense you feel. If you are into fantasy, I would definitely recommend this book for you.

  4. For my free choice book I read " The Supernaturalist " by Eoin Colfer. I really enjoyed this book because it was very different from most of the books I have read. What Surprised me was that Faustino basically betrays them and go's to make a nuclear reactor but thankfully ditto and Stephan can stop him. What also surprised me was when I found out that the parasites could drain energy from buildings and also multiply but it was also surprising to find out that most of the parasites were coming from the Clarissa Frayne Institute.

  5. The book I picked for my free choice was The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner is a book involving survival and trust. I liked the mysterious atmosphere of the book and how the characters began to piece together the mysteries of the maze and how to get through it. The author did a very good job describing how horrifying the Grievers were. Characters like Alby, Newt, and Minho made the book more exciting by having them interact with Thomas in different ways. Some of my favorite chapters was when the main character known as Thomas outsmarted the Grievers and was able to get rid of them. In all The Maze Runner is a very good book and I really enjoyed reading it.

  6. For my free choice book this summer I read If I Stay by Gayle Forman. If I Stay was a heart-wrenching book for me to read. I think the author did an outstanding job of pulling out the reader's emotions. Mia is a teen girl who is faced with the most important decision she'll have to make. She either has to face death or a very hard life without family. Along the way, as she makes her decision, her friends and living family let her know their thoughts. As I read this book I was really put into Mia's perspective and felt how hard this decision might actually be. I really enjoyed this book, and would love to read some other novels by Gayle Forman in the future.

  7. For my free choice book, I read Looking for Alaska by John Green. I’ve read other books by John Green before, and they have always been very touching and well written. In this book, the main character, referred to as “Pudge”, enrolls into a boarding school. There, he meets many new people, but the one that really catches his eye is Alaska. They become very good friends and create many memories. But when a tragedy hits the school, Pudge tries to find the answer as to why this happened. I loved reading Looking for Alaska because of how I fell in love with the characters, but also because of one of the messages I got from the book. That message was that some questions may never be answered, so all we can do is move forward.

  8. My free choice book was We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. The story followed a girl around the age of 16 who suffered from family problems, boyfriend problems, and PTSD. It was a very moving story with an enormous shock at the end and I highly recommend it.

  9. My free choice book was "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mart Twain. The story follows Tom Sawyer and his friends, who live in a small town on the Mississippi River. As the book goes on, they do everything from catching robbers and finding their treasure to sailing on a boat to an uninhabited pretending to be pirates on the Mississippi. The book was really fun and I would recommend it to anyone who has not read the book before.

Then tragedy strikes the school and nothing will ever be the same again. The crew sets out to find closure to what happened. 11. For my free choice book this summer I read The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake. It is about Maleeka an African-American girl who has very dark skin. She meets a teacher (Ms Saunders) who was born with a streak across her face that is a different color than the rest of her skin. Everybody teases Maleeka about how dark she is. But then Ms Saunders comes to the school and turns things around for Maleeka. It is a very good book and I would recommend it.

  12. I choose to read the book Focus by Alyssa Rose for my free choice book. This is the second book in this series. At the beginning of this book Allie (the main character) has gotten engaged to a paranormal prince and can not back out now. She was supposed to go to Princeton College and she had to transfer to a college in New Orleans. At the beginning of this story Allie is angry at Levi (Prince) for tricking her into something she can't get out of. Throughout the story she starts to forgive him. Allie then is almost killed in a fire that was meant to kill her. After a ski trip with her mom and having to spend time with her ex boyfriend who turns out to be the enemy. Allie leaves for New Orleans then when she get's back she finds out that her ex boyfriend goes and kidnaps her best friend all because she wouldn't get back together with him or so she thinks. Although this book ends in a cliff hanger, I still loved it though and definitely recommend this book.

  13. I did Big Game as my book for the forestry topic. I picked this because it is about a twelve year old boy (named Oskari) who lives in Finland and has to go out into the wilderness to hunt for something in order to become a man. Along the way he finds some terrorist (Hazar and Morris the presidents body guard) who were trying to shoot down Air Force One and kill the President (Known as Alan or Bill). Oskari later finds the president and helps to protect the President from the terrorist and also trying to find his dads secret hunting spot for a deer. At the end Oskari and Alan are saved after Finding the main body of the plane where they were almost killed by Morris and Hazar. Morris is killed by a piece of shrapnel (that was slowly making it's way to his heart) from a bullet that couldn't be savaged after saving the presidents life. Hazar is later supposedly burned to death after Oskari shot a arrow that was lit on fire into the lake that was covered in fuel from the plane. Oskari at the end became a man even though he didn't get a deer or a bear and got to hang a news clipping a soldier brought to him in a lodge.

  14. As my free read book I decided to read a book called Stealheart. It's about a boy named David joining these rebels known as the Reckoners after his father is killed by an Epic called Stealheart. (Epics are like super villains or super heroes.) After ten years of planning David joins the Reckoners so that he may be able to get his revenge on Steelheart. David tells of his plan to kill Steelheart and gain control of Newcago where he lives. They first take down the power station that powered the city. After a mission to capture an epic who could transfer his powers to other people Megan a girl David had a crush on "dies". Near the end David finds out Megan is an Epic that can create illusions and be revived, and is known as Firefight, one of Steelhearts right hand people. David finally kills Steelheart by handing Steelheart his own gun were he stuffed an explosive pen in the barrel using Steelhearts weakness against him. (Steelheart could only die from someone who wasn't afraid of him.) David also got to get Steelhearts skull which turned to steel after he died. I would honestly recommend this book though. It is full of action and some good and bad puns.

  15. For my free choice book, I read It's Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. This book is about a fifteen year old boy with depression, named Craig. One night, after coming extremely close to taking his own life, he makes a bold decision and checks himself into a mental hospital. During the five days that he's there, Craig meets and connects with Noelle, a girl who helps him find "anchors" that make him happy. He discovers that in his future, he sees himself becoming an artist. Even though this novel was about depression, it wasn't depressing at all, mostly just entertaining and intriguing.

  16. For my free choice book this summer, I chose to read Anatomy of a Misfit by Andrea Portes. I thought this book was well written, but I didn't really identify with the main character, Anika. This book is about a teenage girl named Anika who's the third most popular girl in school. When she starts to like a boy named Logan, who's not as popular as she is, she sees him in secret so she can remain favored by her peers. She finds out that Logan has an abusive father and a rough home life. Anika then meets a boy named Jared who is older and popular and Anika chooses to be with him, afraid that the most popular girl, Becky, will ruin her social status if she's with Logan. Near the end of the book, Logan dies in a tragic event, and leaves Anika feeling guilty and shook up because she recognizes how much she really cared for him. I feel like this book makes you think about the choices you make and the effects of peer pressure to fit in.

  18. For my free choice book this summer, I read In Real Life by Joey Graceffa. This book is an autobiography about the journey Joey has been through to find himself, and accept himself. In this book he also talks about growing up with an alcoholic parent. He also talks about how him and his best friend, Brittany, who he went to high school with, started their YouTube channel, WinterSpringPro. He talked about their YouTube channel growing bigger and bigger, gaining hundreds of thousands of subscribers. In conclusion, this book shows that no matter what you think some ones life may be, it's most likely not at all what you think. There is a quote in the book that goes, "It's not where you begin that matters, it's where you end up."

  19. The free choice book I read over the summer was Pendragon: Before the War by D.J. MacHale (this was the first book in the Before the War trilogy). The [first] book is a fantasy (a genre that, strangely, matches me better than any other genre) that tells very graphic events occuring to the Travelers leading up to the war with Saint Dane (the antagonist of the main series); this book holding the tales of Kasha, who is a Klee, which is a large cat that, awkwardly, acts like a human, Vo Spader, who is a human that lives on a massive floating habitat that sails across an endless ocean, and Vincent "Gunny" Van Dyke, who is a military veteran from WWI that lives in the urban areas of New York City in 1937. This trilogy is a must-read for those that love fantasy, literally 'teleporting' between territories (worlds, in a sort), et cetera. Hopefully others will like it as much as I do. If you do read the trilogy, be sure to read the main series next.

  20. For my free choice book I chose to read Divergent by Veronica Roth. I thought this book was very well written and very detailed so it was easy to read and understand. This book was about a place where everyone is divided into five separate groups called factions. You are born into whatever faction your parents are, but when you are sixteen you are able to change into whatever faction you want after taking a test telling you what faction you are fit for. Some people, called Divergents, get multiple different factions as their results. These people have to choose one of these factions on their own. The main character of the story is Tris Prior. When Tris is sixteen and takes her test, she finds out she is a Divergent. She must choose from her families original faction, Abnegation; which values selflessness, a faction which she looks up to, Dauntless; which values bravery, and a faction she dislikes, Erudite; which values knowledge. Tris chooses Dauntless and leaves her family to join completely new people in a completely new place. She struggles to fin in in Dauntless, being a Divergent and a former Abnegation. But she tries very hard to make it through the training she must go through to become one of them. I really enjoyed reading this book because of the action that takes place throughout the entire story and the suspense that always makes me want to keep reading. I usually don't like books of this genre, but I really loved reading this book and I would recommend it to pretty much everyone.

  21. For my free choice book I chose to read Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight. I thought this book was very well written and very well detailed so this made the book pretty easy to understand. This book was about a girl named Amelia who lives in an apartment with her single mother in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Amelia's mother would do anything and everything for Amelia, however her job makes it very hard for them to spend time together. Amelia goes to a private high school called Grace Hall. This school is very cliquey. There are certain groups at Grace Hall, one of them is the Magpies. This group of girls excludes anyone who is not tapped into their group. Amelia somehow finds herself hanging out with these girls, forcing her to lie to her mother and lifelong best friend Sylvia. These girls are not allowed to tell a soul who is in their group. With all of the lies she has to tell, Amelia is slowly starting to get eaten away by all of the guilt. She wants to tell her mom and Sylvia everything, but she is too afraid of the Magpies -well Zadie who is one of the group leaders- to tell them. One day at work, Amelia's mother Kate gets a call saying to get Amelia because she has been suspended. Now this worries Kate to death because Amelia would never do anything so bad to get suspended. Assuming there is an explanation to all of this, Kate tries to get over to Grace Hall as soon as possible. However, it's too late. When she gets there, there are a handful of officers, and then she sees a body being covered by a tarp. She gets as close as she can and notices Amelia's shoes, attached to the body underneath the tarp. The next thing she knew an officer asked if she was Amelia Barron's mother. Kate, so shaken, said yes. The officer put his hand on her shoulder and delivered the worst news that Kate could possibly imagine. Amelia was dead. This book is a mystery in which Kate and the police are trying to solve throughout the book. They go through every last detail in Amelia's life, leading up to her death. Kate just doesn't understand why the police think it's a suicide, however she has no idea what really happened to Amelia. Reconstructing Amelia is one of my all time favorite books because I like how it keeps you guessing throughout the entire book. This is a book genre that I normally seek out because I love being on the edge of my seat and trying to figure out what happens. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a thrilling mystery.

  22. For my free choice book, I read 2nd Chance by James Patterson. In this book, Detective Lindsay Boxer of the San Francisco Police Department investigates the murders of an elderly woman and a young girl who happen to be related to police officers. In order to solve the case, Lindsay works with her three friends: Jill, the assistant D.A., Cindy, a reporter for the Chronicle, and Claire, the medical examiner. In the end, all of them manage to put all of the information together and track down the killer. I thought that this book was written with a lot of suspense, which kept the book interesting until the end.

  23. My free choice book was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, I read it as my free choice even though it was on the reading list.
This book I would say was very detailed, and had connections. This book was about a boy named Brian who’s parents were divorced, which meant Brian had to visit his father every summer, and in the plane on the way to see his father, the pilot had a heart attack. Leaving Brian to steer the plane and land it in the middle of no where. Brian landed it in in a lake, and the rest of the book is him having to cope with living off the land and surviving in the woods with little food and no tools except his hatchet, that Brian’s mother gifted him right before he left to see his father.
In conclusion, living out in the woods of Canada changed Brian, in a way he couldn’t entirely understand. Once he was rescued, from using the emergency phone he found in the pack he had to get from the plane, which was sunken in the water. He would be in stores looking at the food and all the varieties that he didn’t have living in the woods for the three months.
This book was written well in a prospective not most books have. This book is good for people who like to hunt or fish.

  24. For my free choice book I read Gone by Michael Grant. This book falls under many categories such as survival, romance, fantasy, and thriller. All of these factors make it a compelling read which had me flying through chapters. Gone has been called "Stephen King's version of Lord of the Flies" and the books do share many similarities. It starts following the character Sam Temple who is a fourteen year old boy with the ability to create light. One day everyone over or at the age of fifteen disappears and he's left with his fellow classmates in what they call the "FAYZ" or "Fall out Alley Youth Zone". In this terrifying new world, Sam realizes other children have mutated like him, and even the animals are starting to change and become dangerous. Bullies and hunger quickly dominate, and it's every man for himself until Sam steps up. As the unwilling leader, the children look to him as a new threat comes onto the scene. Caine, Sam's brother who had been given away, comes down from Coates Academy along with an army of private schooled kids. As they battle for resources and control, a bigger problem lurks. There's a creature in the mines that they have yet to meet but is calling out to kids on both sides and luring them away. So though the story is mostly about Caine and Sam fighting in the beginning, Gone takes on a larger theme as they must band together to defeat the creature. This book is by far one of the better stories I've read because not only is the plot always thickening and keeping you on your toes, but the style in which Michael Grant wrote it is impeccable. Although I love this book, I'm afraid I can't recommend it to everyone. It is most certainly not a story for those easily scared or saddened seeing as many of your favorite characters won't make it to the end.

  25. for my free choice book i decided to read No Easy Day by Mark Owen. No Easy Day is a true story of Mark Owens journey as a Navy Seal. He had wanted to be part of Seal Team Six for many years. After nine hard months of training in Green Team Mark Owen became part of Seal Team Six. Al Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden was their number one target after the attack on September 11, 2001. Team Six had spent many years looking for bin Laden, they had gone on many missions but couldn't find anything about bin Laden. Owen had gone on multiple mission, he was even in the mission that rescued Captain Phillips. In 2011 Owen received a message from his boss, he had been selected for a special mission. He was told he would be training in North Carolina. He knew this wasn't just any mission, he knew it was something big. While the team was training they found out that they were going after Osama bin Laden. The team trained as much as they could for this one. Bin Laden was found living in a large house in the Suburbs with many other people. The team had to wait for the president to give the final word, this held them up and made them very anxious, but once they got the word they were on their way to the biggest mission of all time.

  26. For my free choice book I read Where She Went by Gayle Forman. It is the sequel to If I Stay. Where She Went is about Adam Wilde’s life after his girlfriend, Mia was in an awful car accident that made her choose between living without her mom, dad and brother or leaving her friends and living family. In Where She Went, Adam goes on with life after Mia chooses her fate. Adam went into depression and tried to live without Mia after she went to Julliard. They tried to stay in touch but Mia got so busy they grew apart. This broke Adam, so he put all of his anger and sadness into his music and got up and did things instead of sitting in his room, writing music and sleeping. He ended up making it big in the music industry with his band, his dream. His dream wasn’t what he thought it would be, he had horrible anxiety issues and wasn’t happy but went through the motions. Adam ran into Mia after she became a famous cellist and they worked through what had been bothering them since after the accident. Adam and Mia were now happy again. I really liked that in this book the POV was of Adam this time, in If I Stay it was Mia’s. This book showed lots of emotions and kept me wanting to read more after each chapter ended in a cliffhanger.

  27. My free choice book was a sequel to "The Green Glass Sea". In the "Green Glass Sea" Dewey Kerrigan and Suze Gordon had to live in this place called the Hill. The Hill is a place were a bunch of scientists and their family's lived during a war. During the war Dewey's father, Jimmy, got hit by a car and died. She then went to live with Suze, who despised her, and her family. After a while Dewey and Suze became best friends, they felt like sisters. The second book is called "White Sands, Red Manace". This one took place in New Mexico during the 1940's. This one was hoe the two 13 year old girls moved, it was really hard for them to try and fit in at their new school. A little later in the book there was a big twist. Dewey's mom Rita came back for Dewey. When Dewey was a baby, Rita dropped her and broke her leg in 5 places. Rita wanted to take her back, but Dewey could never forgive her for that and so she wanted to stay with the Gordons. It wasn't only that though, Dewey felt like she finally had a family and now Suze was like a sister, she really did t want to leave them. Dewey finally got her mom to realized it was bett for the both of the. If Dewey stayed with the Gordons. Dewey the. Lived happily with the Gordons, but still saw her mom and spent time with her.

  28. I read the book Zac and Mia by A.J. Betts. I highly recommend it, especially if you have read and enjoyed the famous The Fault in our Stars. Similarities in the two books are that they are both romance based with sad parts and the two main characters have cancer. It can be a bit confusing at some points, but it was very good overall. It's about how two cancer patients come together by having "taps" and "knocks" on the wall of the hospital bedroom, since their rooms were back to back. Months later the girl finds her way to boys farm, and fall in love. My favorite part of the book is how the author divides the book up to show different points of view of the two main characters. I highly enjoyed reading this book and very much recommend reading it.

  30. The book that I chose for my free choice is Dead Girls Don't Lie by Jennifer Shaw Wolf. The book is about a a girl named Jaycee and her best friend Rachel, who was murdered. Rachel tries to find different clues to unlock the mystery surrounding her friends death. One of the clues that she finds during this time is on her friends old collage, stating "making the cut" which eventually proves to be a very important clue. The story ends with Jaycee finding out that her boyfriend was involved with the crime and I would definitely recommended this book to anyone because it kept my interest. The second book that I chose to read was Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine. This book was about a girl named Caitlyn with Asperger's whose brother was killed in a school shooting. Caitlyn's father was very depressed after Devin's death and Caitlyn wanted to change that but didn't know how . Caitlyn finally convinced her father to complete Devin's chest that he was working on to reach his Eagle Scout badge. This eventually gave both of them "closure" as well as the community. I enjoyed reading this book because something positive can come out of even the worst situations.

  31. One of the free choice books I read was Armada by Ernest Cline. I liked this book so much I read it in two days. Armada is about a boy named Zack Lightman. He is obsessed with videogames, but he is obsessed with a game called Armada the most. Zack is sixth in the world on the Armada rankings. The company that made Armada also made a game called Terra Firma. Terra Firma and Armada are both in the same story line: squid-like aliens have come to destroy Earth and humans must defend it. A organization known as the EDA (Earth Defense Alliance) was formed to combat the aliens. The aliens developed a technology where they can remotely control there ships and tanks from there own planet. The EDA managed to steal that technology. So both sides remotely control there vehicles and weapons. In Armada you control vehicles in space, in Terra Firma you control land vehicles. The thing is that isn't a made up story, there really are aliens from Europa that are coming to attack Earth. The EDA is real and made those videogames to train people for the oncoming war. Zack is selected to be in the EDA because he is so good at Armada. During the battle Zack figures out that the aliens never wanted to fight, the humans were the ones that had started this whole war. Just before the humans are about to win and use a huge gun called the Icebreaker to destroy Europa Zack manages to destroy the Icebreaker saving the aliens. It turns out that the aliens were actually testing humans. They wanted to know if the humans were a peaceful planet. The aliens are in a group called the Solidity. A organization of planets focused on peace. Due to Zack letting the aliens live Earth has passed the test are accepted into the Solidity. Bringing a new peace age to planet Earth.

  33. My free choice book I read over the summer was Paper Towns by John Green. I thought this book was very good. It was about a boy named Q who's friend Margo Roth Spiegelman goes missing. Q is in love with Margo and is determined to find her. Q finds clues that were left for him. He and his friends, Radar, Ben, and Lacey help him figure out the clues. They follow the clues to abandoned subdivisions, and an abandoned strip mall. They find a main the strip mall, and it points to a fake place called Agloe in New York. She called it a "Paper town". Q, Radar, Ben, and Lacey set out on a road trip to Agloe, New York. The only catch is that Margo is going to leave Agloe in 24 hours. They rush to New York and make it there. They drive around looking for "Agloe" and see nothing. Finally, on a deserted back road, they see a rundown barn. Margo's car is parked near the barn. Margo is in the barn, and they finally found her. I really loved this book because it always left you wondering what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this book if you haven't read it.

  34. The free read book this summer was The Martian by Andy Weir. This book was a gift for my birthday, and let me tell you im not one who's usually into Sci-Fi-ish books. It turned out to be an amazing book. Soon to be "A Major Motion Picture" this book had excitement at every turn, but kept it reasonably feasible for a future manned trip to mars. The books takes place a couple of years in the future, after Nasa has already launched multiple manned trips to Mars under the name Ares. Ares three had landed and set up and astronaut Mark Watney was caught off guard with the rest of his crewmates in a huge sandstorm. During the sandstorm during their communications fell and stabbed Mark in the stomach, his crew assumed that he was dead and left Mars. Mark was faced with the impossible odds of surviving on Mars alone during the remainder of the time until the next Ares mission. Upwards of 900 days. Now I don't want to spoil anything so ill end with the fact that this book is an amazing view of human ingenuity and willpower.

  35. The book I choose to read this summer was Born at Midnight by C. C. Hunter. This book is the start of the Shadow Falls series consisting of five books. I absolutely loved this book! I love to read and write fantasy and Fiction, so this series was exactly what I hoped to find and read.
This book is about a girl, who finds out in her teenage years that she is not a human. She had nightmares at midnight every night and, when looking out her window, she saw a soldier, that no one else could see. Her soon to be divorced parents send her to a summer camp known as Shadow Falls. She finds out that the camp was not meant for humans, but meant for supernaturals. She notices right away what this camp was really about. Fairies, Vampires, Werewolf, Shapeshifters and Witches go to this camp, all around her age, to train and learn. There is a little romance between her and and Half-Fairy, but she focuses more on her new life. Her parents don't know a thing, and keeping the secret when outside of the camp is a challenge for her. The main part of the story is her trying to find out what supernatural she is, while being chased by a very dangerous and very deadly enemy who wants to kill her for a reason no one knows.

  36. The 2nd free-read book I chose to read this summer was Strike by D.J. MacHale. In this thrilling story ending 3rd book in the trilogy of books, the book starts with Tucker and his friends strapped in a military helicopter over the mysterious dome in which the invaders from the future built, using new technology to kill 3/4's of the planets population. The helicopter is shot, now spinning out of control, where the windshield shatters to razor sharp glass, instantly killing the pilot. The side door is blown open, where Tucker is grown to the desert floor, put into a coma. He wakes up, his leg injured very badly. He manages to force himself by dragging himself across the desert floor to the wreck. He finds no bodies, and falls into another coma. This time, he wakes up in a medical center run by the future invaders, the Retros. Now, I don't wanna go any further then here because spoiler reasons, but I highly recommend Strike and the 2 other books in this trilogy, SYLO (first book) and Storm (2nd book) The strength, will, and effort Tucker shows to keep both himself and his friends alive is truly amazing, and the friendships built along this storyline.

  37. For my book I chose no easy day by Mark Owen. Mark Owen is a Navy Seal on team six. The book is about his life as a Navy Seal. The book starts of how he became a Seal and his first couple missions and how it affected his life. The middle of book is about several of missions he did but the most important one he did was to rescue Captain Richard Philips whos cargo ship was boarded by samalin pirates and he was taken capted by them on a life boat. The last part is my favorite part. One day he gets a letter saying he has to go to seal HQ. When he gets there he get told that only the best of the best seals were picked the mission is to kill Osama Bin laden. During the mission he is right behind the person who kills Osama Bin Laden. this was one of the best books I have read I rate it 4 and half out of five stars

  38. The free choice book I chose was Summer with a twist by Citra Tenore. This book was good but i wasn't great,it was not exciting and a little bit boring but it had some good parts to it. This book was about a girl that tight she was going to have a great summer and hang out with her friends and go to a really special concert instill her parents surprised her with a trip to the ocean to stay with there family. she thought she was going to have the worst summer ever because she had to go to her aunt and uncle and her three boy cousins house. But at the end she decide that she did have lots of fun and she was fine. I recommend this for younger readers because it was not very mature. My second book I read was The secret life of bees. This book was one of the best books i have ever read and i am so glad i did. It had so much adventure and i couldnt stop reading it i just wanted to know what happened at the end. This book was very sad in the binging but get happier near the middle of the book. This book was about a girl who got very abused by her father because she on accident killed her mom when she was younger, so she decides to run away with her housekeeper and is trying to find if her mom is really dead or is her dad hiding her to punish her fro shooting a gun in the house. This book is written about when there were trying to free slaves so it was very sad. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone it was very good and i would rate it a 9 out of ten because it did have about one slow part but the rest was very interesting snd exciting.

  39. For my second book that I read this summer I read If I Stay by Gayle Forman.
This book is about a girl in her senior year of high school named Mia who has to make one of the hardest choices anyone can make. She was in a horrible car accident with her family. The rest of her family passed away. She didn’t die immediately nor did she survive immediately. She was put in this form where she could walk around and talk but no one heard her or saw her. She had to make the decision on her own, whether she died or she lived. I loved how the author wrote this book. The author had Mia go back to happy and bad moments in her lifetime to help her with the decision. Mia went into the memories once she was reminded of something that happened in the memory or she needed to get reminded of life before the accident. It was a great book and I am glad I read Where She Went, the sequel to If I Stay. Both were really great books and I would like to read some of the other books that Gayle Forman has wrote.

  40. Wonder By R.J Palacio
Wonder is a interesting book about a boy named August going to a real school for the first time in middle school. This book is interesting because this boy has a genetic malformation. On the first day he meets a girl whose name is Summer, Summer becomes August's friend. As the year progresses August makes more friends and gets treated poorly but over comes the obstacles that he faces. I would recommend this audio book or book to everyone who likes happy endings

  43. I read "The Book Thief" as my second option for this project and I really liked it. I loved the vivid detail that Liesel used to describe the world to Max, I feel that is imagination that only a child has. i was very sad when Rudy Steiner and Rosa Huberman died but I was even more touched when Hans Huberman died. He was very important to Liesel and the way that Death described him made it all the more real. I think that my favorite aspect of the book was the fact that it was narrated by death. The way that Death described thing make him seem human versus just being something that happens.I really liked this book and all of the realistic aspects of the characters and the narrator.

  45. For my free choice, I chose to read Mockingjay by Susan Collins. This is the last installment to the Hunger Games Trilogy. I enjoyed this book, but was not impressed with the writing. Susan Collins was not as descriptive as she was in her other books. And the book was overall very sad and the plot became hard to follow at points. The book begins with Katniss Everdeen (the main character) agreeing to unify the districts by destroying the Capitol. She and her sister and mother are then placed in underground facilities at District 13 for her protection. After months of training and rebelling against the Capitol, she is sent with a group of soldiers to infiltrate and demolish it. Their journey is thrilling and suspenseful and I think Susan Collins did a good job emphasizing that. Once they reach the Capitol there is commotion and havoc and suddenly Katniss glimpses her sister, who is a medic, running and helping wounded people in the streets. Then suddenly bombs go off. And Katniss' sister, Prim, is killed. The book then jumps through time to her mourning over her sister and spending her days recovering from the explosions. She is then sent to kill Panems former president, President Snow, and as shes about to shoot she decides otherwise and shoots the upcoming president, President Coin, instead. She is then sent to solitary confinement from months on end until her trial is done and she can go home. The book ends with her and her former victor, Peeta Mellark, many years later watching their children run through the meadow at District 12. (I strongly suggest you read the former Hunger Games books before reading this one because you need certain backround information.)

  47. For my first free read, I read the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. It is about a post-apocalyptic city in which lay five communities that they call factions. The five factions are named Candor, the honest, Amity the kind, Abnegation the selfless, Erudite the smart, and Dauntless the brave. You are born into a faction, and you remain there until you are sixteen. Once you are of age, you take a test determining which faction you are most compatible with. A lot of people get one faction, but some get multiple. Those people are called Divergent. The government does not tolerate Divergent because they can’t be controlled. After you take the test you go to your choosing ceremony. There you choose the faction you truly want to be with. Once you choose the faction as your final home, you must pass initiation. If you don’t pass initiation, you will become factionless and be cast out on the streets and into the pity of Abnegation. If you do pass, you live in the faction and get a job. The main character’s name is Beatrice Prior. Beatrice takes her test and finds out that she is Divergent. At the choosing ceremony, she starts to choose between Dauntless, and Abnegation. She chooses Dauntless and tries to fit in and pass initiation. Along with initiation a lot of other crazy and exciting things happen. I highly recommend this book to people who like adventure, excitement and suspense. I really enjoyed this book and I am planning on reading the whole series.

  50. For my free read I chose the book The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau. The book is very much like The Hunger Games, but these tests are confidential. Contestants are tricked into being tested to their mental and physical boundaries without consent. I found the book exciting and the plot was well created, and foreshadowing was a huge part of understanding the story. It was witty and well written and makes you second guess your own character and how you hold yourself in society.

  53. I read "Beautiful Darkness" by Kami Garcia, and Margaret Stohl. It was a very long and interesting book about people with powers such as witches and Shifters, but it is in a very different concept. This concept is much more deep then normal books about people with powers, Its not just about powers but it also has emotional aspects such as, Death, Love and Sadness. It is a very good story. I recommoned it to anyone that is looking for a big book to read.

  56. My book choice was called The Secret Life of Bees. This book was really interesting because it was about black history.
The book is about a girl named Lilly, and she killed her mother by accident when she was three, leaving her and her father in the peach farm. Lilly had a black housekeeper named Rosaleen, who got in a fight with white men. Of course, Rosaleen got sent to jail. Lilly then broke Rosaleen out of jail and they ran away to find a person who made honey, that Lilly didn't know anything about but she found the honey jar with her mothers belongings. This book was both sad and happy. I recommend this book to people who like reading about history.

  57. For my free read I choose the book Summer Ball by Mike Lupica. I am not a fan of how he writes and his choice of words. I choose this book because I wanted to read a sports book. The book was alright it was about a boy named Danny Walker who goes to a really high level basket ball camp with his friends. In the middle of the book Danny sneaks out of camp to go see his friend Tess ( who's across the lake). The ending of the book was a little cliche-ish (Danny's team in camp won the championship). The book was alright and not my favorite. Middle level readers who like to read about sports would enjoy this.

  58. The book that I chose to read, was ‘Dreamland’ by Sarah Dessen. At first I wasn’t so sure about the book just by reading the back. It didn’t really seem like a book that I, personally, would read. After I read the book, I realized how great the book really was. It was filled with real life situations such as peer pressure, standards for people, and many more. The book really went into depth about what it’s like to be someone that has high expectations, and for someone who doesn’t. It told how someone with that much pressure on their shoulder to be perfect, can actually feel too pressured. In this book the main character, Caitlyn, had a perfect sister it seemed. Her sister ran away from home in the beginning of the book. Now that Caitlyn is an ‘only child’, all the pressure to be perfect is now on her. At first she feels good about all this, but later on in the book the pressure and stress catches up to her, and she starts to realize why her sister ran away. All this stress and pressure leads to her making bad decisions. After she started to do cheerleading, she met this guy Rogerson. They eventually develop a relationship with each other, and start dating. After a while, she realizes that Rogerson is that kid who does drugs, underage drinking, partying etc. Sadly, Caitlyn starts doing the things her boyfriend does. Such as drugs, and partying. At first she was hesitant about it, but soon drugs became a regular thing. This book showed how easy it is to give into peer pressure, especially when someone you love or know is the one pressuring you. Those are some of the major reasons why I enjoyed this book so much. It puts a different perspective on a lot of things. This book taught many good lessons, and as I said, went into depth about real life situations. Eventually in the book, Rogerson starts hurting her physically. Of course she loved him, so she wasn’t leaving him for beating her. But one time he took things too far, making her unconscious. Her parents caught him in the middle of it, and he was put into jail. On the other hand, the author of this book showed how hard it is to cope with all of her bad decisions, which most shows/ books don’t show. Caitlyn had to go to rehab, both for drugs and her ‘physical experiences’. It took a long time for her to finally get better, do to her physical and emotional damage. Overall, this book was one of my favorite reads because of how educational and entertaining the book was. Constantly putting the reader on edge to find out what would happen next, yet teaching lessons.

  60. For my first book I read rules by Cynthia Lord. This book is about a teen age girl named Catherine who has a autistic brother named Steven. Most of her life her parents have payed most all of their attention to him and Catherine just wishes she could have some of that attention sometimes. When Catherine's parents are not home during then summer she has to take care of Steven, so over the years she has made rules for him to follow so he doesn't act out in public. The basic rues are 'don't take your pants off in public' Say excuse me when you burp' and ¨You can yell at the playground but not at the dinner table¨ Catherine summer was pretty boring until the day she meet the girl next door named Kristi, Catherine wanted a friend and Kristi was perfect she just had to get the courage to talk to her. That same day Catherine went to occupational therapy with her mother and Steven like always, and saw a boy named Jason and started to draw him. Jason's mother noticed and got angry, but before she could do anything Jason used his speaking cards to say that he liked it. From that day on they had a unique relationship, every once and a while Catherine would make updated cards for him. As the story goes on Catherine and Kristi start to become friends and her and Jason go though some difficult things. This story has both humor and heartbreak.

  61. For my free book I choice Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley. It was in 1994 when Jack Bradley died his family said he was a quit man who owned a funeral home in Wisconsin. But what they did not know was that he was the last living solider who raised the american flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on February 23 1945. When the Bradley's were cleaning out his office they found a cardboard box with all of his belongings from the war they found his Navy Cross that he earned as a navy corpsman. The navy cross is the second highest award you can get next to to Medal of Honor. James found a letter to Johns parents saying raising the flag was the happiest time of his life. James thought if it was the happiest time of his life why did he not talk about it so he decided to make a book about his fathers time on Iwo Jima. The book starts off as James talks about all of the the flag raisers one by one. Then he gets into the training that they did to get ready for the battle. My favorite part of the book is when they hit the beaches of Iwo Jima and the battle begains. The last part of the book is about the bond tour that John and the other flag raisers did to make money for the war effort. I rate the book a five out of a five. If you like history I recemend this book for you.

  62. The free read book I chose to read this summer was called Burn for Burn, by Jenny Han. This book was about girls, Lillia, one of the popular kids, Kat, a rebellious teen, and a quiet girl named Mary. The book is in the point of view of all three of the girls, alternating each chapter. Although these three girls came from different backgrounds, and have totally different personalities, they had worked together to get revenge on a few people who had wronged them or somebody close to them. For Lillia, she wanted to get back at a boy who hurt her younger sister, Kat, decided she needed revenge on her ex-best friend, and Lillia's current best friend. Mary on the other hand, needed revenge on a boy who would bully her during her elementary school years. The three girls stopped at nothing to get what they wanted.

This book is about four people as they find out more about a life threatening virus. Their goal is to find a cure for this virus before their friends and themselves go insane as the virus eats them away. This book tells a lot more about the Maze Runner and why Thomas and his friends have been put in a maze. It also talks about how and why the virus was made and what the sun flares did to the world. Over all this book was really good and I could not put it down.

  65. For my second book I read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This book is about a teen age boy named Brian who gets in a plane crash and has to survive in the woods. Brian was living flying out to his fathers house for a visit in a small plane with just him and the pilot. Durring the flight the pilot has a heart attack and Brian has to take over the plane. Brian was trying to work things but the plane was going down, he was yelling in the radio to try and get help but no one would answer. As the plne was going down brian spotted a lake, he decided it was better to crash there instead of into a tree. Once Brian crash landed the plane and dragged himself out of the water he sat against a tree getting eaten alive by bugs. Brian spents day building a shelter and trying to signal for help. Brian had to hunt for food to stay alive, he learned many as he was fighting to stay alive. I love this book because it gives so much detail and you can picture everything thats going on. This book has also taught me some survival skills if you are ever stranded in the woods. In the end of this book Brian gets rescued by a helicopter, but after many people wrote to the auther and told him that they want a book where Brian has to survive the winter in the woods. Gaury paulsen listens to the people and decided to write an entire series. This is an amazing series of books and one of my favorites.

  68. The other book I read for my summer reading was “Moving The Chains” by a journalist named Charles P. Pierce and it is a biography about the NFL quarterback Tom Brady. The book describes how Tom Brady played for the Michigan University Wolverines and how he outplayed the starting quarterback to be one of the best Michigan quarterbacks in school history. The book also shows how Tom Brady was not favored to be a first-round draft pick and the Patriots still believed that he could be a very solid weapon and a great player like he is today. So in conclusion, ‘Moving The Chain” is a very good summer reading book.

  69. For my free choice book I read Wednesday Wars. Its the year 1967 the Vietnam War is going on, Holling Hoodhood is going into seventh grade his teacher this year is Mrs. Baker. In the beginning his teacher does not like him for some reason, he does not know why. Doug Sweiteck a kid in his grade likes to make fun of him just because he thinks he's the teachers pet even though he’s not so Doug gets in trouble and blames it on Holling. Now every Wednesday he has to stay after in Mrs. Baker's classroom helping clean the classroom and taking care of her pet rats. Some days they would read William Shakespeare, after they read The Tempest, Mrs. Baker said that their was going to be a play about it, she blackmailed Holling that he would an A on the next class thing they did and if he didn’t be in the play he would forever get F’s in her class. He decided to go in the play and be Ariel that is a fairy but is a guy. It turns out the reason she did not like Holling was because that he husband was in Vietnam, but in the end her husband comes home and Mrs. Baker does not hate Holling as much anymore but still hates him even though the book does not say why. I sort of liked this book it was confusing at some parts but maybe if I read it again it would make sense.I would recommend this book for grades 7-8 because there are some things that might not make sense to a sixth grader.

  70. The first book I read for summer was “White Fang” by the author Jack London. The book is about a wild wolf in Yukon, Canada trying to survive the harsh conditions. The author wrote the book as if it were in the perspective of the wolf himself. I really liked how the author described
how difficult it was for White Fang to live in the hard conditions the cold weather, and the freezing temperatures. I also really liked how the author added how the other characters like One Eye, Ben, and all the other wolves were ruthless. In summary, I really like “White Fang” as a summer reading book.

  74. For my free choice in summer reading, I chose to read "Dork Diaries", it's about this 8th grade girl named Nikki J. Maxwell who was new to a private school, she met 2 of her friends there named Chloe and Zoe, they helped her out through the school year, but there was one problem, a mean girl named McKenzie Hollister and McKenzie wanted nothing to do with Nikki J. Maxwell, so McKenzie started to bullying Nikki and making her life a misery. My favorite character though is probably Nikki because I love her character and her personality seems nice, and she's caring, she always helps out her friends, and Nikki doesn't let McKenzie get her down because Nikki knows her worth. I love that this book also relates so much to kids in 8th grade so it kind of helps you understand 8th grade in a different way.

  75. The free choice book I chose was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This book is about Harry Potter in his third year at hogwarts. The book starts out with Harry Potter at his relatives house. He gets made at his relatives and uses magic, after the use of his magic in the non magic zone he thinks he will get expelled. After the magic he goes to the Weasleys. At the Weasleys he goes shopping for school and takes the train. When they get to the school they figure out a magic killer is on the loose. He had escaped from the jail and was on the hunt for Harry Potter. Harry has several close encounters with the killer in the book. I thought this book was the best out of the first three. I think everyone who likes fantasy books should read it.

  77. I read Ungifted by Gordon Korman. Ungifted is about a boy named Donovan Curtis who accidentally wrecks the school's gymnasium and is caught by Dr Schultz. Dr Schultz wrote Donovan's name of a piece of paper so that he could deal with him later. Donovan and Dr Schultz were leaving the room when Dr Schultz' assistant came for a list of names for the Academy of Scholastic Distinction. Dr Schultz told it was on his desk, the assistant went in and took the piece of paper with Donovan's name on it. Donovan later got a letter saying that he was accepted in to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction. Even though he was confused he went with it, Donovan knew that Dr Schultz wouldn't look for him in a school full geniuses. While Donovan was there hiding he got to know students (Abigail, Noah, Chloe, and many other students) at that school he showed them things they had never see before. He showed Youtube to Noah, he helped them stay out of summer school by bringing his sister in to teach them about being pregnant, and he controlled the robot for the robotics team. Donovan had to retake the test he "took" to get in. His friends at the Academy worried because they all like him and he was the only way they would win at the robotics meet. They came up with a plan to keep Donovan at the school. When Donovan started the he realized someone was changing his answer. He decided to let the person change all of his answers for him so that he could stay at the Academy. Finally Dr Schultz caught Donovan and he was in a lot of trouble. Donovan still got to got be a part of the robotics team. Noah was switched to Donovan's school because he told the teachers that he helped Donovan on the test even though it was Abigail.

  78. I read MockingJay by Suzanne Collins and I chose to read this book the series already interested me and I think Suzanne Collins is an extraordinary writer. MockingJay is the third in the "Hunger Games" series. MockingJay begins with the main character Katniss in her old home in district 12 after the Capital District and district 2 bombed it, the downside being that there are multiple ships that went invisible above her because she is the most valuable rebel in district 13. More into the story Katniss has to make commercial like things called propos in one of the she is sent to district 8 and witnesses a hospital be destroyed so she calls out for assistance and revenge. Around the middle of the story they went on a mission to rescue another friend of Katniss' Peeta who is another valuable resource to district 13 and also rescue the other captives and succeed after he was tortured but had makeup on to hide it and he was brainwashed to be on the side of the Capital District. At the end of the story Katniss with the inclusion of all of district 13 and they find out that the capital has set up traps like the hunger games. After they finally reached the capital steps they find a group of capital children in a walled off square and they drop in the packages that look the same as the gifts in the hunger games but when they open them they're really a bomb and blow them up. the medics rush in along with Prim Katniss' sister and another bomb goes off and more children die along with Prim. I really enjoyed reading this book because it always kept me on edge and I really want a sequel.

  79. Over the summer I read Paper Towns by John Green. It was about a girl named Margo Roth Spiegelman and a boy named Quentin Jacobson (also known as Q), Margo was one big mystery, in the middle of the night she went through Q's bedroom window ( she lived across the road from him) and asked him to go for a ride with him because she needed an extra person to
help her finish her "to do list." The next day when Q went to school Margo wasn't there. When he got home from school he saw that Margo's parent were at his house. Her parents said that she ran away but she has done this before and she always leaves clues. Q figures out all the clues and goes and finds Margo on graduation day. I really liked this book because it has some mystery in it and it was by John Green and all of his books are fantastic!

Matt is left alone to guard the cabin and his family's land while his father heads back east to pick up his mother and sister and bring them back to the cabin. Alone, Matt has to work together with a Native American named Attean and Attean's Beaver Clan to survive the harsh winter ahead of them. I would recommend this book for grades 6-8 because when I read this book in 4th grade it did not make that much sense but now, that know more words that are in the book I can understand it better.

I can’t remember the book that well because I read it the week we got out of school. I dint now that we had to blog about this book to. I love Grover with flying shows except that they were a set up by Luke to get Percy in to a big hole. Medusa was very crepe I never imagined her like that. It was really sad when Nico sister dies for a toy for him. I loved the giant pig that they rod on that was kind of cute. I hate the snake things that were chasing them and I like the girl at the dame. That all I really remember sorry I would have read it later or blog right after if I had now.

  82. This summer I was a Junior Intern at the New London Barn Playhouse. During the summer we did a Shakespeare play, As You Like It. During rehearsals I took it upon myself to read the whole script to help develop the character I was playing, Silvius. Part of the play follows Silvius and Phoebe, a shepherd and shepherdess, in the Forest of Arden. Silvius has fallen deeply in love with Phoebe, but Phoebe resents him. Since Silvius would do anything for Phoebe to fall in love with him, Phoebe uses him to deliver letters to Ganymede the “man” she loves. Later in the play Phoebe comes to find that Ganymede is actually a woman who has run away from her kingdom. Phoebe, shocked, then realizes what Silvius has done for her, and finds herself in love with him. Then the two of them get married in the Forest of Arden. What surprised me the most about the story of Silvius and Phoebe is that Silvius was willing to do anything for Phoebe despite her hatred towards him. In the story, Silvius is told many times that Phoebe is wicked and he should stop. It amazed me that Silvius ignored those people and stuck to his gut because he was so in love with Phoebe. On the other hand, I do find it pathetic that he stays despite being used by Phoebe. I thought about this when creating my own Silvius. It helped me better understand Silvius’ intentions and morals so I could then think about his thoughts, emotions, and actions.

  83. This summer I read Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins and personally i think Collins did a fantastic job wrapping up the series. Mockingjay is the third instalment in the HUnger Games series and picks up right where the last one left off (Catching Fire). I really enjoyed this book because out it was sort of unique. I liked how Collins kept a more humane side to katniss and had her face equivalent mental problems to physical. I also really enjoyed and was shocked by the final kind of plost twist at the end when katniss shoots president Coin instead of snow and slips into insanity almost. Overall I think this was a fantastic ending to great trilogy of books. Overall Collins did a wonderful job.

  86. One of the books I read this summer was, Rand Paul’s “Taking a Stand”. This book talked about Senator Paul’s policies and ideologies. The first part of the book is a brief biography that talks about his background and family life. Rand talked about his strategy to win the 2016 election, and how he would balance the budget. I found his stance on foreign policy to be very interesting and think it would be a drastic change to what the country has now. The book also talked about the debt and how to handle it. Rand Paul thinks cutting government agencies like the IRS and ending programs like the Affordable Care Act . He also focused on the tax code and how he would change it. This is one of the most important issue in the 2016 election. I agreed with what Senator Paul had to say on almost all of the issues. After reading the book, I had the opportunity to go hear Senator Paul speak in Concord.

  87. For my free read book I read "Jurassic Park" by Micheal Crichton. Like a lot of movies made from books, "Jurassic Park" is nothing like the movie. The book is about a rich man who (with the help of Japanese investors) gets the money to fund a dinosaur park by extracting dinosaur DNA from prehistoric bugs caught in amber. The park then loses power and the Tyrannosaur and Velociraptors break free from their paddocks and causes chaos. I felt that the book had a very good choice of words to help me paint a picture in my mind of what was going on and that made the book really interesting. It was a bit long but certainly worth reading.

  88. The free read book that I read was The Help. The Help is taken place in a town named Jackson, Mississippi. In this town black maids work for white people. In this book a girl named Eugenia "Skeeter" who is 22 years old gets a job and writes for the "Jackson Journal" about housekeeping advice. She writes about her maid who she has loved since she was little named Aibileen, and she also writes about other maids in Jackson. She writes this to try to get a job for writing in New York. Most all white people in Jackson don't treat maids like human beings, but Skeeter is different. See Skeeter is always nice and tries to help the maids. She only does this when other white people aren't around because if people knew then they wouldn't like her. Skeeter also asks them questions so she can write her article About maids in Jackson. Skeeter gets the job and her article/book is published and people start to read it and change. They change and start to get nicer to maids in Jackson and other maids in different places. i would recommend this books to others because it teaches how hard it was to live as an African American maid in the 1960's. The author did a good job of describing and really did a nice job on showing how they feel. This book was defiantly not a waste of my time.

  94. For my free choice book I chose Paper Towns by John Green. I had previously read The Fault In Our Stars and decided to read another of his books. I can relate to this book and all of Margo's thoughts. I believe that Margo has a great understanding of life and this is what caused her to run. She knew too much about the world around her and couldn't explain to anyone else what this felt like (Not to be depressing). I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see different perspectives on our society. John Green really outdid himself!

  97. For my free read this summer, I read The Giver. The book takes place in the future and is in the point of view of Jonas. Jonas is an 11 year old boy, who lives in a society that is free of pain, and war. Everybody in this society is mostly the same; they all look the same, act the same, and are all very polite to everyone who crosses their path. They call this "sameness". Once a person is old enough, they are assigned a job, then later, a spouse, and two children, no more, no less. Jonas is granted the job of the Receiver of Memory, and is the keeper of all the community's memories. Later on, Jonas meets a man. He tells Jonas to call him "The Giver". The Giver is the one that Jonas receives the memories from. The story continues on with memories that The Giver gives to Jonas. I really understood and enjoyed this book and I'm glad that I picked it to read this summer.

It was difficult to find time to read it because Hatchet took up most of my summer, So i didn't get to finish the book until last week. I didn't enjoy the book at all. But i had to read it. It took place in the indians and cowboys era. There was an indian (Native American) family who has to find other members of their family to take care of their newborn baby that was only a few months old. They where doing this so their baby would survive. They couldn't take care of him they live in such a cold climate .

  100. My free read book was This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki. This book is about a girl named Rose who goes to a lake house in Awago beach with her parents every summer. Rose's mom is a little down on their vacation due to some depressing news a while ago and she takes it out on her family, but Rose doesn't let that drag her down. Rose and her best friend Windy like any other best friends have some secrets about some drama about the boy who works at the store. That drama ends when someone almost drowns and Rose's mom jumps in the water to save a girl which brings back some bad memories for her. I feel like I can relate to this book a lot and that's why I like it. Some ways that I relate to it is the constant moments that keep you guessing as to what's going to happen next; and the two best friends that can just get away from the world, but sometimes not each other.

  101. Alright, so the first book I read was The Mortal Instruments; City of Bones By: Cassandra Clare. It was so interesting and ultimately hardcore. Jace Wayland, and Alec and Isabelle Lightwood were just minding their own buisness, killing a demon. Then from across the club, Clary Fray, a normal mundane sees them through the strong glamour they put up. She tells her friend Simon to go get the bouncer, and she gets to the three shadowhunters. She sees Jace about to murder the demon and, thinking its an innocent person, tells them to stop. The hunters look over in astonishment at this unusual mundane who can see them. Is Clary really just a mundane, or has her mother hidden all these dirty secrets? The shadow hunters would like to know...
I highly reccomend this book, its so addicting!
